As a professional developer, your code must be organized into functions. A function, as per the official definition, represents a section of your program that performs a specific task.
Often times, you'll find yourself re-writing the same code over and over. If you find yourself doing that, delete your code! (kidding). Although, it is indeed very bad practice. One of the main reasons why you should use a function is because of re-usability. Once a function is defined, it can be invoked as many times as you wish without having to messily copy and paste your code.
